Maxint.net Technical Information

This little adventure in system administration got its start back in the summer of 1995, just before I started my Sophomore year at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. At that time, I had seen Linux in use on some of my friends' machines around WPI, and decided to try the system out. Back then, I was connected to the Internet through WPI's residential ethernet, and my "network" consisted of a single Pentium 120 called flytrap. Later, I transferred to K-State and ran the site on the KSU dorm ethernet, at which point I also registered the maxint.net subdomain. After that, I discovered broadband and ran the domain through a couple of different ADSL providers. Today, flytrap is still the main system, though it has been joined by a few siblings, and the Internet connectivity is achieved through a business-class cable connection provided by Cox Communications.

The Maxint network is currently composed of several computers linked by a private LAN and connected to the Internet by NAT. The "main servers" are flytrap and freefall, both Linux-only systems. Flytrap runs the web server, mail server, DNS, and provides routing and firewall access to the network. Freefall is an Alpha Server hosting the AFS cell, LDAP directory, and assorted other services.
